GR1
Artist GR1 began working with graffiti in the late 1990s, fascinated by the hip-hop culture that was popular at the time. Graffiti, a major element of hip-hop culture, is an Italian word meaning “scribble” and is an act of leaving writings or drawings in public areas without permission. The artist explores phenomena and outcomes resulting from cultural, political, and social conflicts and clashes as his subject material, and his graffiti-based work encompasses various media such as painting, video, and three-dimensional work. GR1 collects and edits images or objects of events, subjects, and places that have been overlooked or discarded, and reconstructs them into paintings or installations. Spraying, a main symbolic component of graffiti, is employed as the artist's main working method.
